I am Vice President, Partnerships and Engagement at the Singapore Management University where I am concurrently Professor of Communication and Technology at its College of Integrative Studies.
From 2017-2022 I was Professor of Communication & Technology and Head of Cluster (Dean) of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences at the Singapore University of Technology and Design. From 2003 to 2016, I was Assistant then Associate Professor at the Department of Communications & New Media; and from 2014 to 2016, Assistant Dean for Research at the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences, National University of Singapore.
With the world around us digitalising so rapidly, heralding transformations that are both subtle and dramatic, I am passionate about studying the social impact of technology. My research focuses on technology domestication by families and young people, AI ethics and the future of work.
Most recently, I authored Transcendent Parenting: Raising Children in the Digital Age (Oxford University Press, 2020) and co-edited The Oxford Handbook of Mobile Communication and Society (Oxford University Press, 2020). My other books include Mobile Communication and the Family: Asian Experiences in Technology Domestication (Springer, 2016) and Asian Perspectives on Digital Culture: Emerging Phenomena, Enduring Concepts (Routledge, 2016). In 2020, I was an honouree of the inaugural Singapore 100 Women in Tech list that recognises and celebrates women who have made significant contributions to the technology sector. I am also Fellow of the International Communication Association.
I am a firm believer in translating academic research for societal benefit and frequently share my expert opinion in print, broadcast and online media via interviews and op-eds in leading outlets including Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Bloomberg, Scientific American, La Tribune, Guardian, South China Morning Post and Channel NewsAsia. From 2018-2020, I served as a Nominated Member of Parliament in the 13th Parliament of Singapore where I advocated for clear guidelines governing the responsible use of AI, data sharing to promote societally-relevant research, greater support for women in tech and championed the enactment of digital rights for children.
