I am Vice President, Partnerships and Engagement at the Singapore Management University where I am concurrently Professor of Communication and Technology at its College of Integrative Studies.
From 2017-2022 I was Professor of Communication & Technology and Head of Cluster (Dean) of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences at the Singapore University of Technology and Design. From 2003 to 2016, I was Assistant then Associate Professor at the Department of Communications & New Media; and from 2014 to 2016, Assistant Dean for Research at the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences, National University of Singapore.
With the world around us digitalising so rapidly, heralding transformations that are both subtle and dramatic, I am passionate about studying the social impact of technology. My research focuses on technology domestication by families and young people, AI ethics and the future of work.
Most recently, I authored Transcendent Parenting: Raising Children in the Digital Age (Oxford University Press, 2020) and co-edited The Oxford Handbook of Mobile Communication and Society (Oxford University Press, 2020). My other books include Mobile Communication and the Family: Asian Experiences in Technology Domestication (Springer, 2016) and Asian Perspectives on Digital Culture: Emerging Phenomena, Enduring Concepts (Routledge, 2016). I am an honouree of the Top 50 Asia Women Tech Leaders Award 2024 and the inaugural Singapore 100 Women in Tech list . I am also Fellow of the International Communication Association ad the Singapore Computer Society. I am a firm believer in translating academic research for societal benefit and frequently share my expert opinion in print, broadcast and online media via interviews and op-eds in leading outlets including Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Bloomberg, Scientific American, La Tribune, Guardian, South China Morning Post and Channel NewsAsia. I write a monthly technology column in Singapore's broadsheet, The Straits Times. From 2018-2020, I served as a Nominated Member of Parliament in the 13th Parliament of Singapore where I advocated for clear guidelines governing the responsible use of AI, data sharing to promote societally-relevant research, greater support for women in tech and championed the enactment of digital rights for children. ResearchI study the social implications of technology domestication in micro-settings such as homes and workplaces, and macro-settings such as smart cities. I have authored more than 90 journal articles, books and book chapters . Research projects on which I have been Principal or co-Principal Investigator have received over $11 million in grant funding in total. I serve on the editorial boards of thirteen journals and two book series.

ServiceI serve actively in public bodies where my research helps to inform policy formulation and public education. I serve on the Social Science Research Council, Singapore Environment Council and Media Literacy Council. I am also active in professional associations including the International Communication Association, the Association of Internet Researchers and the Singapore Computer Society as Vice President of the Women in Technology Chapter. From 2018-2020, I served as a Nominated Member of Parliament in the 13th Parliament of Singapore.

TeachingI have taught a wide range of undergraduate and graduate courses including Theorizing Society, the Self, and Culture, Social Psychology of New Media, Mobility & New Media and Social Media & Society. I have won eight awards for excellent teaching at both university and faculty level. Notably, I won the NUS FASS Teaching Excellence Innovation Award for my flipped classroom teaching. I have supervised many graduate students at Master's and PhD levels, and welcome inquiries from prospective students.
