Biography |
Sun Sun LIM is Professor and Head of Cluster (Dean) of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences at the Singapore University of Technology and Design. From 2003 to 2016, she was Assistant then Associate Professor at the Department of Communications & New Media; and from 2014 to 2016, Assistant Dean for Research at the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences, National University of Singapore. She was also Head of the Singapore Research Nexus. She holds a PhD and an MSc (Distinction) in Media and Communications from the London School of Economics, for which she was awarded the Raffles Rothschilds Chevening Scholarship.
Her research seeks to uncover the intricacies of the relationship between technology and society. She pays particular focus to the factors that influence how people domesticate technology, where her principal work delves into the home setting. With technology encroaching into virtually every realm of our lived experience, her latest research extends to the implications of technological disruptions in the workplace. She also investigates technology domestication writ large, focusing on digital literacy, user perceptions, and public understanding of pervasive ambient technologies deployed in smart cities. Her latest books include Transcendent Parenting - Raising Children in the Digital Age (Oxford University Press, 2020), Mobile Communication and the Family - Asian Experiences in Technology Domestication (Springer, 2016) and Asian Perspectives on Digital Culture: Emerging Phenomena, Enduring Concepts (Routledge, 2016). She has conducted extensive fieldwork in Asia including in China, Indonesia, Singapore and South Korea. She has lectured and published widely in leading international journals including the Journal of Computer Mediated Communication, Journal of Broadcasting and Electronic Media, New Media & Society, Computers in Human Behaviour, Communications of the ACM, Communication, Culture & Critique, Telematics & Informatics and Feminist Media Studies. She serves on the editorial boards of eleven journals including the Journal of Computer Mediated Communication, Journal of Children and Media, Social Media & Society and Mobile Media & Communication. She is Series Editor for Mobile Communication in Asia: Local Insights, Global Implications (Springer), a series of volumes featuring research by emerging scholars of mobile communication in Asia. She has taught a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses including Communications, New Media & Society, Social Psychology of New Media and Mobility & New Media. She has won eight awards for excellent teaching at both university and faculty level. Most recently, she won the Faculty Teaching Excellence Innovation Award for her flipped classroom teaching. She contributes actively to public bodies where her research helps to inform public policy formulation and public education. She chaired the New Media Taskforce of the National Committee on Youth Guidance and Rehabilitation. Most recently, she developed the Social Media Resource Kit for Youths-at-Risk with the support of the Ministry of Social and Family Development. The kit offers teachers, social workers and counsellors a comprehensive resource for guiding youths and their families on the benefits and risks of social media use and is used by schools and youth sector organisations throughout Singapore. She is also a member of the Media Literacy Council and the Singapore Media Academy Academic Board. She previously served on the National Internet Advisory Committee, the Internet and Media Advisory Committee and the Advisory Council on the Impact of New Media on Society working group. She is also a founding member of the Singapore Computer Society’s Special Interest Group on Women in Technology that seeks to increase gender diversity in the technology sector through mentoring and peer support of female technology professionals. From 2018-2020, she served as a Nominated Member of the 13th Parliament of Singapore. |
